For families

Looking after a child with coeliac disease can seem a daunting prospect. But there are many ways in which Coeliac UK can guide you through initial challenges and provide you with ongoing support as you and your child get to grips with the gluten-free diet.

Parents or carers of children with coeliac disease are welcome to join Coeliac UK on the child's behalf until they are under 16.

On joining Coeliac UK you will receive a parents' and carer's pack containing the following information in addition to the Food and Drink Directory and Crossed Grain magazine:

  • 'Gluten-free living for children; Getting started: a guide for parents and carers' which covers what foods are and aren't gluten-free, how to check food labels to select safe foods, tips on eating out, how to get gluten-free foods on prescription and simple suggestions to help get you started cooking gluten-free
  • 'Gluten-free living for children; Out and about: a guide for parents and carers' includes information on living with coeliac disease for your childcare provider, tips on avoiding contamination, how to manage starting nursery or school, ideas on meals for packed lunches and organising special occasions such as children's parties   'Me and my tummy' booklet
  • 'Me and My Tummy', a fun story booklet with child friendly illustrations to help explain coeliac disease and how gluten affects the gut (aimed at children 7 years or under)

A template letter that gives you an idea of information you can give to school is available by clicking here.

If there is more than one person with coeliac disease living at the same address, you can take up Household Membership - for more information and details of packages visit our Join Coeliac UK section.

The above information booklets are part of Coeliac UK's Membership pack. Some of our information leaflets as well as a range of useful cookery books and other publications are also available to buy at our shop.

As a member of Coeliac UK you will be allocated a local group. They provide local support and put you in touch with parents in a similar situation. Many run events specifically for families.

Thank you to Dawn McAllister, Coeliac UK's Diet and Health Advisor and mother of a coeliac daughter for supplying much of the information in this section.
